ALBAWABA-French President Emmanuel Macron convened an emergency summit in Paris on Monday, gathering key European leaders to address the US administration's sudden policy shift on Ukraine under President Donald Trump.
The meeting, attended by leaders from Germany, Britain, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, and EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen, focused on addressing the impact of shifting U.S. policies on Ukraine and reassessing EU security priorities.
The summit comes as Washington signals a willingness to engage directly with Moscow, with US and Russian diplomats set for their first face-to-face meeting since the Ukraine invasion—a move seen as an effort to bring Russian President Vladimir Putin in from the cold.
European leaders, fearing that Trump may strike a peace deal with Russia without Kyiv or the EU at the table, are now weighing options, including boosting defense spending and even deploying troops to Ukraine as peacekeepers in the event of a ceasefire.
Macron, who spoke with Trump just before the summit, stressed the need for Europe to take control of its security.
EU Commission chief von der Leyen echoed this urgency, calling for a "surge" in defense spending, while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer signaled Britain's readiness to send troops if necessary, describing the moment as a "once-in-a-generation challenge" for Europe's collective security.
