Former US Congressman David Duke spoke to a group of Syrians while on a visit to the country last week, saying that the US, like Israel, was occupied by "Zionists."

The prominent leader from the US state of Louisiana made the comments in a speech aired by Syrian state television, in which he said that "Zionists were occupying New York.” “It hurts my heart to tell you that part of my country is occupied by Zionists, just as part of your country, the Golan Heights, is occupied by Zionists,” he said.

He added that “It is only in America and around the world, it is only the Zionists who want war rather than peace.” He also said that “many other capitals in the world” were also controlled by Zionists.

Duke told crowds that he came “from the peace-loving people in America to the peace-loving people of Syria,” according to media reports. Syrian parliament member Muhammad Habash, said that he welcomed "Duke’s wonderful visit," and was happy to have been given “a new and very positive view of the average American."

In an article once published by Duke, he stated that "(A) black...gets a job with a white-owned company. He is the only black at the firm. He works hard, but he's fighting a losing battle against his genes."
