Former Egyptian Minister of Defense dies

Former Egyptian Defense Minister Mohammed Abdul Ghani Al-Gamassi, who supervised the military aspect of peace talks with Israel, died in Cairo Saturday, according to MENA news agency. 

 

Gamassi, who held the rank of field marshal, was 82 years old. 

 

He played a major role in planning the 1973 Arab-Israeli war and was appointed chief of staff of the Egyptian armed forces during the conflict. 

 

The next year he was appointed defense minister and supervised the military aspect of negotiations with Israel that culminated in the Egypt-Israel 1979 peace treaty. (Albawaba.com)
