Five US troops, 16 Iraqis killed in attacks

At least 16 people died in a shooting and a bombing in Baghdad on Thursday, police said. According to Reuters, gunmen opened fire on a minibus taking workers to southwestern Baghdad, killing eight people and injuring one.

 

In northern Baghdad, eight people died and nine others injured in an explosion apparently targeting a police patrol. The victims included three police officers and five bystanders.

 

Elsewhere, a US sailor died in Iraq's Al-Anbar province in the course of "enemy action," the US military announced Thursday. The sailor died Wednesday and was attached to the marines' Regimental Combat Team 5 stationed around Fallujah. In addition, four U.S. soldiers and their Iraqi interpreter died Thursday when a roadside bomb struck their vehicle northwest of Baghdad, the U.S. command said.
