Iraq is due to take part in an upcoming meeting of the commission on Gulf War prisoners of war, the first time since boycotting the group at the end of 1998, an Arab League official said Wednesday.

"Iraq has officially informed the Arab League that it agrees to participate in the meetings of the tripartite committee," also made up of Kuwait and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Ali al-Garoush said.

Iraq's intention to attend was communicated by Mohssen Khalil, Baghdad's representative to the Cairo-based league.

"Iraq has demonstrated by this announcement its willingness to find a way to resolve this humanitarian problem, which has existed for nearly 12 years," Garoush said, according to AFP.

The next meeting is planned for early 2003, said Garoush, who handles the POW issue in the league's department of Arab relations. (Albawaba.com)
