Only 2% of UAE residents use Power Toothbrushes (either battery operated or rechargeable) according to a recent survey. “The majority of adults in the UAE are still using manual toothbrushes for their oral care, putting themselves at risk of accumulated plaque and gum disease.”
The survey, commissioned by Oral-B, the brand used by more dentists worldwide, was conducted in February 2006 among adults in the UAE. Results of the survey showed that an overwhelming majority still use manual toothbrushes as part of their daily oral hygiene practices.
Dr Rafih Khoury, a leading UAE dentist commented saying: “Although manual tooth brushes are good for all ages, power-based toothbrushes can deliver much better results among adult users. As dentists, we try to migrate adult users to power-based toothbrushes but it is hard to change people’s habits. So, as a result, patients, although treated properly, remained at risk of accumulated plaque as well as gum disease.”
The survey showed that the majority of adults in the UAE fear that using power tooth brushes might damage their teeth or even electrify their mouth. Dr. Khoury says:” Of course, these fears are baseless and result from a serious lack of adequate knowledge. Power-toothbrushes, battery-based or rechargeable, are totally safe; this is why we recommend them to our adult patients. In fact, using a power toothbrush gives users more results per second.”
Clinical studies show that power toothbrushes reduce the brushing force that users need to apply during brushing and therefore, help reduce gum recession. Along with being superior to manual toothbrushes in reducing gingival inflammation and bleeding, they considerably reduce stain and calculus better than manual toothbrushes. Independent clinical studies have further shown that power toothbrushes with a rotation oscillation action - a technology pioneered by Oral-B- , reduce plaque and Gum Disease more than manual brushing. Further research shows that rotation-oscillation toothbrushes are likely to reduce plaque and Gum Disease by between 7% and 17% more than manual toothbrushes. (www.thecochranelibrary.com)
LK Gupta, Brand manager for Oral-B, Arabian Peninsula, commented saying:” Oral-B pioneered the “rotating oscillation” technology more than 10 years ago. The technology has been proven to be demonstrably more effective in removing plaque and reducing Gum Disease than other types of power and manual toothbrushes.”
