ALBAWABA - In the Syrian coastal city of Latakia, a strong explosion occurred in the Al-Raml Al-Janoubi area, causing injuries and fatalities. It is believed that numerous people remain buried under the debris.

Due to contradicting claims from various sources, the cause of the explosion is still unknown.  SANA, the Syrian national news agency, acknowledged the explosion but said it is yet unclear what caused it.

According to a Syrian security source who spoke to Al Jazeera, unexploded munitions from previous wars may have been the origin of the explosion.  According to a Syrian Civil Defense source cited by Turkey's Anadolu Agency, the explosion wounded many individuals, and it is unclear how many are still buried under the rubble.

Emergency personnel are attempting to rescue those impacted by the explosion, which took place in a four-story residential structure.  To ascertain the precise reason of the tragedy, authorities are still conducting their investigation.
