One-year-old conjoined twins have arrived in Dallas from Egypt to undergo tests to determine whether they can be safely separated.
The boys are connected at the crown of their heads. Mohamed and Ahmed Ibrahim were born on June 2, 2001, by Caesarean section to the wife of a laborer in a remote village some 800 kilometers south of the capital of Cairo.
The babies had been at the Abu el-Reesh Hospital in Cairo since shortly after birth, according to SPA.
They arrived in Dallas, USA on Saturday afternoon. Tests are scheduled to start Monday at North Texas Hospital for Children at Medical City Dallas.
Dr. Kenneth Salyer, a cranio-facial surgeon, and other specialists are handling their care. Three doctors and two nurses from the North African country of Egypt traveled with the twins.
"So far these babies have fared well," said Dr. Nasser Abdel Al, head of neonatal surgery at the Cairo hospital. "They taught us a lesson not to despair." (Albawaba.com)
