In Egypt, a court Sunday threw out a seven-year jail term handed down against a district governor convicted of corruption last year and ordered a retrial.
The court of cassation provided no immediate reason for its decision to retry Maher al-Gendi, governor of Cairo's Giza district from 1997 to 1999, saying that it would elaborate on its judgement in a couple of days.
Retrials were also ordered in two related cases - the head of the justice ministry's department for illicit gains, Ali Ismail Ibrahim, who was jailed for five years at the original trial in June for covering up for Gendi, and culture ministry spokesman Mohammad Fouda, who was acquitted, AFP reported.
Gendi was accused of receiving bribes worth one Egyptian million pounds for the sale of state lands to a private construction company at discounted prices in 1999. (Albawaba.com)
