Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Maher said Saturday that US Middle East envoy General Anthony Zinni’s return to the region is essential because “the Israeli violence would not stop without the American intervention.” The return of Zinni is important, Maher told reporters, so he can put an end for the dangerous developments in order to start implementation of the Mitchell recommendations and Tenet plan.

Zinni was in the region last November, but returned to Washington without making any progress. Maher said Egypt was following with great concern the fatal situation in the occupied territories, adding that President Hosni Mubarak received a message from the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat on Saturday over the Israeli hostilities against the Palestinians.
