Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak warned in Cairo Tuesday that the chaos spreading in Iraq endangered the entire region and that only an elected government could restore order in the country.
"This feeling of insecurity, chaos and lawlessness that is spreading in Iraq right now has a very bad effect and a dangerous impact on the region at large," Mubarak said in a nationally televized speech.
In his broadcast marking the 51st anniversary since the Egyptian monarchy was overthrown in 1952, Mubarak said there was one "outlet" to the current problems in Iraq.
"We should work with a sense of perseverance that the Iraqis themselves are the ones who should govern their country," Mubarak said in his words.
"It should be an elected Governing Council that would have the potential and capability to help restore calm and order..." the Egyptian leader said. (Albawaba.com)
