For lack of the 50+ quorum, the sub-elections of Egypt’s Bar Association were put off to next Sunday in Cairo.
Citing the election law, the committee in charge of the Cairo sub-elections announced Sunday that the quorum for next week’s session will be complete if a third of the 30,000 members cast their ballots.
The number of candidates for the head of Cairo’s council is 10, while 157 are running for membership of the 10-seat council.
The former Cairo Lawyer Association Chief, Abdul Aziz Mohammed, who is attempting to regain his post, indicated in an interview with Albawaba.com that the elections are characterized by the large number of candidates.
Accordingly, Abdul Aziz expected confusion in the election coalitions.
Abdul Aziz added that this phenomenon reveals the enthusiasm among people for the working through the professional associations and for participating in rebuilding the union after all that has been done during the time when the association was banned from functioning. He said that he did not rule out the possibility of the Muslim Brotherhood candidates wining most of the seats in the association’s branches elections, as was the case with the general Bar Association elections last month. He added that this would not be a problem and if he wins the post of Cairo Association chief, he would not face any difficulty in dealing with them despite the fact that he belongs to Al Wafd Party.
The former top official of Cairo Bar Council underlined the fact that the candidates’ programs in these elections are focused on services offered to members rather than mere politics.
