The Dubai government is about to spend more than $219 million to expand both Dubai Internet City (DIC) and Dubai Media City, due to increasing demand from computer and media companies, according to a report by MSNBC.com.

The plan calls for the 790-acre industrial park -- which currently has 340 occupants including Microsoft and Oracle -- to eventually house 900 companies. Already, the government says, there are some 100 companies on the waiting list for space.

According to the report, construction will begin this month and be completed by March 2002.

IBM, in collaboration with the DIC, is planning a joint initiative involving the building of two managed Internet data centers. The first center, offering a wide range of e-business hosting facilities, is expected to become operational late this year – Albawaba.com
