Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides discussed in Nicosia Wednesday developments in the search of a settlement to the protracted Cyprus problem with US State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston.
The meeting occurred just before Clerides' departure for Paris, where he is expected to meet Friday with United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, the Cyprus News Agency reported.
Weston did not make any statement following the Presidential Palace meeting. CNA news agency has learned that the US special envoy expressed satisfaction with the Greek Cypriot side's efforts to reach a solution, emphasizing that the United States administration was focusing its efforts to convince the Turkish side to work on the same line as well.
Later Wednesday morning, Weston was to cross into the areas occupied by Turkish troops since 1974 to meet Denktash. Afterwards he was to return to the government-controlled areas to discuss developments with Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides. Weston leaves Thursday morning. (Albawaba.com)
