The Corsican National Liberation Front (FLNC) claimed responsibility on Tuesday for three attacks on police buildings on the French Mediterranean island over the last month.

The separatist group said it was responsible for firing automatic weapons at police stations in Corsica's main towns of Bastia and Ajaccio on March 24 and April 10 respectively, and for blowing up the half-built home of a police officer on March 25.

No one was killed or injured in the attacks.

In a statement sent to several news organizations on the island, and which has been authenticated, the FLNC said the attacks were a response to "ongoing judicial and police repression" and to delays in reforms to give Corsica more autonomy.

But the statement added that the attacks "do not bring ito question our ceasefire declared on December 23, 1999."

Prime Minister Lionel Jospin's government has attempted to bring to an end two decades of separatist violence in Corsica by proposing a law giving the island increased autonomy, which will be debated in parliament on May 15.

The FLNC is one of a number of separatist groups which called a ceasefire when Jospin launched his initiative and which has broadly been respected -- AJACCIO, Corsica (AFP)
