Clashes between police and rioters left two people dead and several injured Sunday in the southern city of Maan.
The violence began when a mob angry about the arrest of a youth attacked a police vehicle, officials said, according to AP. Police said the youth had thrown stones at a patrol car.
Later, crowds attacked police, firing guns at the officers, officials said. Police returned fire, killing one man, officials said. Several people were wounded, two of them critically, according to a doctor at the city hospital.
One of the wounded was a policeman. A curfew was clamped on the city. Gunfire continued into the night and could be heard on the outskirts of Maan, residents reported.
On Nov. 10, five people were killed, including two officers, after police stormed the city. In recent years, pro-Iraq demonstrations have turned into riots in Maan. The area also is known to be a center of smugglers trafficking arms from neighboring Iraq and Saudi Arabia. (Albawaba.com)
