ALBAWABA - According to the latest statistics, 28,600 cases of Cholera have been recorded across Yemen in governorates under the control of the internationally recognized government in addition to more than 148 deaths confirmed.

According to an EIDEWS study, the total number of reported Cholera cases reached 28,596 in the governorates of Dhali, Aden, Abyan, Lahij, Taiz, Hodeidah, Marib, Hadramawt, Al Bayda, Shabwa' a, Saqtara and Al Hra between 1 January 11 August 2024.

UN special representative Hans Grundberg alerted the UN Security Council that efforts to address urgent needs in Yemen, where food security is deteriorating and the number of suspected cases of cholera, which had been estimated at 60,000 between April and September, are being hampered by a lack of funding. As of early August, there were over 147,000 cases.

Only 25% of cholera patients can be treated with current funding, and U.N. health experts warn that if more funds are not immediately provided, "the number of suspected cases could further increase, potentially reaching more than 250,000 in just a few weeks,".

Despite the decline in conflict that has broken out since the six-month truce in 2022, Grundberg raised grave concerns about the recent developments and events in Yemen.

He mentioned rumors of fighting in six towns and cities. "We are continuing to witness military preparations and reinforcements accompanied by continuous threats of a return to war," he added.

Addressing hunger across Yemen, Lisa Doughten, the U.N. humanitarian office’s finance director, said that 60% of Yemenis surveyed did not have enough food and that in Houthi-controlled regions, the percentage of severely food insecure people had more than quadrupled from 17% to 36% in comparison to the previous year.
