Egyptian police detained the Cairo bureau chief of Al-Jazeera TV, the Qatar-based television channel reported Thursday.

According to the AP, Hussein Abdel Ghani said that he was being accused of "propagating false news". "It was a complete police kidnapping operation - beyond the law," Abdel Ghani said. "I was treated in a very inhuman way," he added.

An Interior Ministry spokesman said Abdel Ghani had been taken in for questioning after reporting a blast in the eastern Egyptian province of Sharkia on Wednesday, a report the ministry said was false.
