The US on Monday renewed its firm backing to the efforts exerted by James Baker, Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary General for the Sahara, to end the Sahara issue.

Washington strongly backs the efforts made by Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary General for the Sahara, James Baker, to find a solution to the Sahara issue, US Undersecretary for the Middle East and North Africa, William Burns, said.

Baker, a former US Secretary of State, had proposed a framework agreement giving the Sahara a large autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty, according to MAP news agency.

Burns insisted that his country is committed, as it has always been, to finding a peaceful solution to this matter, the agency added.

Moreover, Burns, who stated the complexity of the issue, said the US is convinced of the possibility of finding a solution, taking into consideration the interests and concerns of the relevant parties. (Albawaba.com)
