Britain Foreign Secretary: Military action against Iran not a possibility

Published September 28th, 2005 - 01:39 GMT

Jack Straw, Britian's Foreign Secretary announced on Wednesday that military action against Iran was not a possibility, saying that such an option was "inconceivable."

"The truth is, as (US Secretary of State) Condoleezza Rice has said, military action in respect of the Iran dossier is not on anybody's agenda" Straw told the BBC.

He added, "All United States presidents always say all options are open…But it is not on the table, it is not on the agenda. I happen to think that it is inconceivable."

Straw made the statements following the recent move to report Iran to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions for not complying with its obligations under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), according to IRNA.

Despite the move to send Iran against the UN council, which was announced formerly on Saturday by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), repercussions will not take place immediately.

Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council told reporters on Tuesday that the IAEA move lacks any legal foundation. Iranian MP's have since written a draft proposal to suspend any voluntary actions which Iran currently practices towards confidence building regarding its nuclear plants.

Such actions include unannounced inspections of nuclear facilities by UN weapons inspectors as stipulated under the Additional Protocol to the NPT, which Iran signed two years ago as a guarantee that its nuclear program served civilian energy needs an not military purposes.
