ALBAWABA - The Syrian capital, Damascus, and the surrounding area were rocked by a series of powerful explosions on Friday night. According to local sources, the attack was likely a drone strike that targeted a sensitive area that housed important military and security installations.

The blasts took place in the Mazzeh 86 neighborhood and surrounding districts, according to Syrian activists and local media. According to preliminary reports, at least one woman was killed and multiple others were injured.  Social media users shared videos of smoke and flames rising from various locations throughout the capital.

According to an RT correspondent, the explosions were audible all over Damascus, and preliminary findings suggest that a drone-fired missile is most likely to be the cause.

According to local sources, a residential area in Mazzeh 86 was hit by an unidentified explosive object, and Western Villas, a neighborhood close to Al-Rahman Mosque that is home to a number of high-ranking military and government officials, was hit by other rockets.

Ambulances and civil defense units were observed evacuating the injured and attempting to contain fires as security and rescue personnel raced to the scene.  One of the three reported explosions occurred along Al-Qasr Road in the vicinity of Ain al-Karoum.

Though sources close to Syrian security services have described the incident as a "potential assassination operation" targeting high-value individuals, authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the attackers or the nature of the attack.

As investigations continue, the region is still under high alert, with significant security in place and roads closed around the impacted areas.

In light of the ongoing regional tensions, the explosions are among the most serious events to have occurred in Damascus in recent months, rekindling concerns about potential instability in the capital.
