ALBAWABA - The head of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, survived an assassination attempt in eastern Sudan, Al Jazeera reported on Wednesday.

According to Al Jazeera, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan was targeted by a drone in eastern Sudan, however, he survived and was transferred to the city of Port Sudan.

The sources added that a "suicide drone" targeted the Sudanese army chief while he was participating in a graduation ceremony for students of a military college in the Red Sea State.

Sudanese air defenses today confronted two hostile drones that targeted the celebration site, the Sudanese army said in a statement adding that the attack resulted in the death of five people and the injury of several others.

The party responsible for the attempted assassination of the Sudanese army general was unreported by news outlets but many claimed that the attempt could be carried out by the Rapid Support Forces.

It is worth mentioning that a civil war broke out in Sudan on April 15, 2023, between the Sudanese Armed Forces, led by Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, generally referred to as Hemedti.

The war, which created the world's largest displacement crisis, left at least 15,500 people dead, according to the United Nations.
