ALBAWABA- A strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Taiwan on Wednesday, shaking buildings across the island but causing no immediate reports of casualties or major damage, authorities said.

The quake hit Taitung County at 5:47 p.m. local time, according to Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration (CWA), while the U.S. Geological Survey measured it at magnitude 6.0.

The tremor occurred at a shallow depth of about 10–12 kilometers and was felt as far away as Taipei. Seismic intensity reached level 5 on Taiwan’s seven-point scale in parts of Taitung.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker, said its operations were not disrupted and no factory evacuations were ordered.

The National Fire Agency reported no damage to transport infrastructure, though local media showed minor incidents such as goods falling from shelves in some supermarkets.

Taiwan sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where frequent earthquakes occur due to the collision of tectonic plates. Authorities issued routine safety alerts, and residents were advised to follow standard earthquake safety procedures.

The latest tremor follows a series of moderate earthquakes in recent weeks, including quakes off Hualien and along Taiwan’s east coast earlier this month.
