ALBAWABA - After handing over a strategic town to minority fighters near the Chinese borders, the Myanmar junta has sentenced three brigadier generals to death after they and their troops surrendered and handed over the town.

"Three brigadier generals including the commander of Laukkai town were given the death sentence," a military source told AFP on condition of anonymity, as they were not authorized to talk to the media. Another military source confirmed the sentencing.

After months of brutal fighting across various parts of Myanmar, hundreds of troops surrendered in Laukkai, northern Shan state, to the so-called Three Brotherhood Alliance in January.

The surrender of all these troops, which is considered one of the military's most significant setbacks in decades, drew rare public criticism of the junta from its supporters as it attempted to quash resistance to its 2021 plan. Following the capitulation, the officers and their troops were free to leave the region.
