At least 25 people were killed in Iraq on Monday in a surge of killings throughout the country. An American soldier was killed by a roadside bomb in the town of Karbala, southeast of Baghdad, while a suicide bomber who blew himself up on a bus in Baghdad killed 12 people and injured 15.
Dozens others were injured in fresh attacks, including a rocket strike on a truck convoy and a bomb in a restaurant which left five Iraqis dead, according to AFP.
At least six people were killed and 19 others wounded when a bomb exploded on Monday morning in central Baghdad. The explosion, according to the AP, occurred in a main square in the capital city.
Iraq's Ministry of Interior stated that the bomb detonated alongside a group of Iraqi workers as they gathered in the morning hours in search of work, reported Reuters.
Another bomb attack targeted the Abu Ali restaurant in the heart of Mosul, killing five people, including one policeman and wounding 21.
Elsewhere, a civilian driving in his car died early Monday in Balad, north of Baghdad, by armed men. And three American troops were injured Monday morning when a roadside bomb exploded in southern Iraq, the US military said.
Meanwhile, two kidnapped Macedonian contractors were freed Monday in the southern city of Basra, a British official said. The two men, who were nabbed Thursday, worked for a Macedonian cleaning company at Basra International Airport. Their kidnappers demanded a $1 million ransom from their employers.
