ALBAWABA- At least 20 people have been killed, around 80 injured, and more than 100 others reported missing after flash floods swept through the city of Parun, the capital of Afghanistan's eastern Nuristan province, authorities said on Monday.
Hafiz Mohammad Yousuf Hamad, spokesperson for Afghanistan's National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA), said search and rescue operations were continuing as emergency teams worked to locate those missing beneath flood debris and in surrounding areas.
The floods, triggered by heavy rainfall, inundated homes, roads, farmland, and public infrastructure in Parun and nearby communities. Floodwaters carrying rocks and debris caused extensive destruction, damaging or destroying residential buildings, a hotel, and key infrastructure.
Nuristan, a remote mountainous province bordering Pakistan, is particularly vulnerable to flash floods because of its rugged terrain and intense seasonal rainfall. The region's difficult geography has complicated rescue efforts and the delivery of humanitarian assistance.
Afghanistan experiences frequent flash floods and landslides during the rainy season, with extreme weather causing widespread casualties and damage across several provinces in recent years. Authorities warned that the death toll from the latest disaster could rise as rescue teams continue searching affected areas and reach remote communities.
