Twelve people died and seven others were injured Sunday when a truck and another vehicle crashed head-on in the south Egyptian governorate of Aswan, local police said.

The police said the truck collided with a vehicle registered to carry paying passengers, but it was not immediately clear where the victims were situated when the accident happened, or whether the vehicle was a taxi or a minibus.

Fourteen people drowned last weekend when two buses plunged into a canal near Minya, also in southern Egypt, police said.

Road accidents are frequent in Egypt, where private minibuses are accused of overloading passengers and failing to respect speed limits in order to increase profits -- QENA (AFP)
