Batman and Superman in Beirut

As a photographer, it’s a waste of time to sit in the office in front of a computer, answering email or talking on the phone. You have to constantly be out there looking for images. You can’t just wait for things to happen.

You also can’t depend on luck as a pro. You have to go looking, you have to make your luck. That’s how I found my images of Batman and Superman. It was completely by accident. But I had been looking.

How minorities are used to promote Islamophobia

Last Saturday, April 2, a news item began circulating on the Internet. An elderly father in Los Angeles had allegedly killed his son, presumably for being gay. Articles covering the story made sure to mention the father’s name, Shehada Khalil Issa, and the son’s, Amir Issa. 

While the family’s religion is unknown (as of this writing), many have leapt to conclusions due to the family’s Arab surname. Jihad Watch, a notoriously Islamophobic website, published an article about the incident entitled “Muslim Man Murders His Son for Being Gay.”

The emergence of political Islam in the mainstream politics in the Middle East and across other Muslim countries since the 1970s has impacted socioeconomic and political development in so many different ways. The return of religion–a symbol of traditionalism–to the mainstream debate about and the struggle for modernization might be unsettling to the liberal mind that sees a clear dichotomy between what is traditional, e.g., religion, patriarchy, patrimony and kinship and what is modern, e.g., rationalism secularism, and individualism.
