There is growing concern in Israel that Egypt may stop supply of natural gas because of the unrest in this country. Late last year, the two countries signed agreements to the supply of at least 1,4 billion cubic meters of gas.
A spokesman for the Israeli Ministry of Infrastructure was quoted by AFP as saying on Tuesday, "this shows us again that the Middle East region is not safe. We need to act to ensure our energy security without relying on others."
Egypt at present provides 40 percent of the Israel's gas needs. The Infrastructure minister Uzi Landau has declared in the past the need to accelerate the exploitation of gas fields Tamar and Leviatan, which recently were discovered off the coast of Israel.
These concerns grew following the remarks of Mohammed Ghanem, a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, who called a halt to the movement in the Suez Canal and oil and gas supplies to Israel.
