The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially kicked off with a dramatic opening match at the iconic Estadio Azteca. Co-hosts Mexico delivered a commanding performance, securing a well-deserved 2-0 victory over a struggling South African side in a Group A clash that will be remembered for its unprecedented disciplinary chaos.

Early Dominance and Clinical Finishes

Mexico controlled the tempo of the game from the very first whistle. The hosts electrified the home crowd early on when Julian Quiñones broke the deadlock in the 9th minute, finishing off a brilliant assist from Erik Lira.

In the second half, veteran striker Raul Jimenez sealed the victory for El Tri, rising high to score a magnificent header in the 67th minute following a pinpoint cross from Roberto Alvarado.

Historic Red Cards and Late Drama

The match made World Cup history for the wrong reasons, featuring a staggering three red cards. South Africa suffered a disciplinary meltdown starting in the 50th minute when Yaya Sithole was sent off, marking the 5th red card ever shown in a World Cup opening match.

The nightmare continued for Bafana Bafana when a VAR review led to a second red card, this time for Themba Zwane (the 6th historically). The red card frenzy wasn't limited to the visitors, however. In the dying moments of stoppage time (91'), Mexico's defender Cesar Montes was also sent off, marking the 7th red card in World Cup opening match history and capping off a chaotic end to the fixture.

Yellow cards were also handed out to South Africa's Teboho Mokoena (17') and Nkosinathi Sibisi (74'), as well as Mexico's Brian Gutierrez (23').

With this result, Mexico takes early control of Group A with 3 points, while South Africa sits at the bottom, facing an uphill battle in their upcoming fixtures.
