A Muslim Malaysian gymnast had her eyes on the prize at the Southeast Asian Games earlier this month, while Islamic clerics apparently had their eyes on something else.
Farah Ann Abdul Hadi, 21, went to the Southeast Asian Games to get appraised for her athletic skills — instead she was criticized for her "revealing" leotard (sometimes known as standard sportswear) and got chided by religious leaders, according to The Independent. I guess six medals hold little significance if the woman doesn't earn them fully covered.
Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria, from Perak, Malaysia, told Astro Awani he didn't think gymnastics was suitable for Muslim women due to the outfits they have to wear. He criticized Hadi for wearing a leotard that revealed her "aurat," thighs and the shape of her genitals.
Hadi spoke out against the complaints on Twitter.
And luckily Hadi had plenty of supporters to back her up.
