In October 2016, a French cameraman named Olivier Sarbil began filming an Iraqi Special Forces campaign to reclaim Mosul from ISIS—or Daesh—after the terrorist group captured the city two and a half years ago.
Now the footage captured will be releasing as Mosul, a heart-pounding documentary that follows four members of the Iraqi Special Forces driven by different motivations. There is Anmar, who is seeking to avenge his father, a suicide attack victim; Amjad, a young recruit simply happy to be on the frontlines; Hussein, a sniper who moonlights as a football player; and Jamal, described as a “wise-cracking sergeant.”
Amazingly, the film’s archetypes do not mean it is a work of fiction: Mosul is a documentary. It will explore the tragedies these soldiers face, and how they are haunted by the things they have seen.
