The Border Guard in Tabuk has arrested two men for allegedly attempting to smuggle 1 million amphetamine capsules into the Kingdom, a spokesman of the body said Monday.
The two suspects, both Egyptians, were arrested after exchanging fire with Saudi security officers, the spokesman said. The smuggling operation was foiled near Dhiba Port on Sunday, when coast guards stopped a boat trying to enter Saudi territorial waters.
The passengers on board threw barrels off the boat when approached by the coast guard, and opened fire on officers as they tried to flee. However, they were eventually caught and arrested. One suspect was injured in the gun battle and taken for treatment at a local hospital.
When the floating barrels were recovered, officers discovered over one million pills. The men have now been referred to the prosecuting authority.
