An amateur photographer captured beautiful images as a rare snowfall settled on the deep orange sand dunes in the Atlas mountains of northern Algeria.

Karim Bouchetata photographed the fleeting snow, which only stuck for about a day, near the town of Ain Sefra on the edge of the desert.

"Everyone was stunned to see snow falling in the desert, it is such a rare occurrence," Bouchetata said.

Snow was reportedly last seen in the area in 1979, and only for half an hour.

Although temperatures in the area can dip to -10 C, precipitation of any kind is rare.
