Landmarks across the globe have turned various shades of blue in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the United Nations.

From the pyramids in Egypt to the Great Wall of China, more than 300 famous buildings and historic structures have been illuminated in the UN's trademark colour in honour of the organisation which was officially established in 1945.

The UN's Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the illumination of buildings worldwide was a fitting tribute to what the UN do.

He said: “To mark this anniversary, monuments and buildings across the world are being illuminated in UN blue. As we shine a light on this milestone anniversary, let us reaffirm our commitment to a better and brighter future for all.”

Pictures were also shared on Twitter of the many landmarks who embraced a blue glow for the weekend celebrations.
