Khaberni reports that a video of a mixed-gender graduation party at a mall in Saudi Arabia has caused controversy.
Both male and female students from the University of al-Taif gathered at the Mall of the Heart of al-Taif to celebrate graduating from the College of Medicine. The university denied involvement in the planning of the party.
The university released a statement claiming that university policy does not allow for students to celebrate in groups in public places.
“The party came after official graduation celebrations and the party for female students was to come the following Wednesday,” the university stated.
Saudi newspapers discussed the event with participating students.
One student pointed out that there was parental permission and involvement in the celebration. “The party was a surprise to students, and it was within the limits of respect and decency and in the presence of parents.”
The Company of Administration for Growth and Development, which is responsible for events in The Mall of the Heart of al-Taif, also released a statement about the graduation party.
“The party was in the center of the mall, shoppers were present, the female participants were in the presence of their parents and all of them were were, without exception, wearing the Abaya and covering their faces – in complete modesty.”
The event company further explained that the party was heavily chaperoned, by not only parents and security, but Saudi Arabia's religious police.
“The ceremony broke no rules, and there was no exchange between male and female participants whatsoever. There were more than 30 security officers present as well as many cameras, in addition to a permanent officer from the Committee for Prevention of Vice and Promotion of Virtue."
