Two women accused of consuming alcohol threw themselves on a judge’s mercy as they begged to be set free.

The African duo fell to their knees at Abu Dhabi Misdemeanours Court, crying loudly and pleading to be released so they could support their families.

They were among a group of five African women who appeared before the court after they were allegedly seen dancing provocatively and talking to men at a party in Abu Dhabi. All but one of the women was sobbing loudly as they were led back to prison after the hearing.

The five have been held for drinking alcohol and prosecutors may bring further charges, a source said.

The source added: “They were drinking a lot and they were dancing with men in a way that was not proper.”

The two women begged for mercy after being told they were to be sent back to the women’s prison while prosecutors considered their case. They refused to get up off their knees despite pleas from a female prison officer.

A third woman in the group sobbed loudly as she stood beside them and also begged to be released on bail.

One woman told the judge she had to take care of her family as they could not afford to live without her support.

It is believed that the case resulted from a complaint. The case was adjourned.
