Hilal Assad, the cousin of Syrian President Bashar Assad, was killed Sunday during clashes with rebels near the town of Kasab on the border with Turkey.
State-media SANA confirmed the death of Assad, the head of the National Defense paramilitary force for Latakia province, but did not provide further details.
Kasab, in Latakia province, has seen stepped up fighting in recent days after three groups – the jihadist Nusra Front and two leading Islamist militias - press ahead with their “Anfal” campaign targeting the coastal region.
