ALBAWABA – In a remarkable auction held during the opening day of Tokyo's largest fish market, a colossal Bluefin tuna weighing 227 kilograms was successfully sold for a staggering $800,000.

The monumental tuna, sourced from the shores of Aomori, found its new owners in seafood wholesaler Yamayuki and the renowned sushi chain Onodera Group. This acquisition marks the fourth consecutive year that Yamayuki and Onodera Group have secured the title of purchasing the market's most expensive fish.

The next destination for this massive catch is set to be a prestigious Michelin-starred sushi restaurant located in the luxurious Ginza district of Tokyo.

While the auction did not break the all-time record, it achieved a significant milestone by establishing the highest post-pandemic price at the Toyosu Fish Market. This sale surpasses any other transaction since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, underlining the continued appeal of high-quality seafood.

It's noteworthy that the current record for a Bluefin tuna sale dates back to 2019. During that year, Kiyoshi Kimura, famously known as the "Tuna King" and the owner of a prominent Japanese sushi restaurant chain, made headlines by spending $3.1 million on a 613-kilogram Bluefin tuna at auction.
