Emirates NBD, a leading banking group in the MENAT (Middle East, North Africa and Turkey) region, has pledged its support to Dubai Can, a sustainability initiative by the Crown Prince of Dubai,  HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The initiative, which targets the reduction of single-use plastic water bottles across Dubai, aims at promoting a refill culture among residents and visitors. A regional pioneer in sustainability initiatives, Emirates NBD is fully aligned with the initiative and is taking steps to drive a culture of consciousness when it comes to single-use plastic water bottles.

As part of the commitment to the cause, Emirates NBD Group is sponsoring a public water station in the residential community, The Greens and Views for a three-year period, allowing residents and passers-by to refill their water bottles for free.

The bank also plans to phase out single use plastic water bottles across its offices. To encourage its staff and employees to switch to refillable water bottles, the Group has launched the #SayNoToPlastic challenge across 42 teams within Emirates NBD, Emirates Islamic and Tanfeeth. The bank will be collecting used empty plastic water bottles which will be recycled to produce drawstring bags. Employees are invited to design a “Say No to Plastic” logo and the winning logo will be used as branding for the bags and handed out to support staff within the bank.

Commenting on the announcement, Moadh Bukhash, Chief Marketing Officer at

Emirates NBD said, “As a socially responsible group, Emirates NBD is pleased to be associated with this sustainability initiative launched by HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. We understand the pressing need to make changes in order to protect our planet and create a better quality of life for future generations. We have implemented several internal programs to reduce single-use plastic water bottle usage across our offices, reflecting our deep commitment to pioneering a culture of sustainability, in line with the government’s Dubai Strategic Plan 2030 and Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. We hope our actions will educate and inspire our employees, partners, peers and others to take necessary steps towards protecting the environment.”

Background Information

Emirates NBD

Emirates NBD, the leading banking group in the region, was formed on 19 June 1963, when H.H. Late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum signed the Charter of Incorporation of the National Bank of Dubai (NBD) which became the first National Bank established in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). With the blessings of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, NBD merged with Emirates Bank International (EBI) on 06 March 2007, to form Emirates NBD, the largest banking group in the region by assets. On 16 October 2007, the shares of Emirates NBD were officially listed on the Dubai Financial Market (DFM). The merger between EBI and NBD to create Emirates NBD, became a regional consolidation blueprint for the banking and finance sector as it combined the second and fourth largest banks in the UAE to form a banking champion capable of delivering enhanced value across corporate, retail, private, Islamic and investment banking throughout the region.
