In keeping with its strategic objective to support initiatives that promote UAE’s culture and tradition, Emirates NBD, a leading bank in the region, organised a visit to the Emirates NBD Pearl Museum for the attendees of the Ladies Morning at the 2013 Emirates Airline Festival of Literature (EAFL). Rick Pudner, Group CEO, Emirates NBD, welcomed a group of female participants at the EAFL, who were given a guided tour of the Emirates NBD Pearl Museum as part of Emirates NBD’s support and partnership of the festival.

The first such initiative in the region, the Emirates NBD Pearl Museum contains the largest collection of natural pearls in the GCC. It is a gift from the late Sultan Al Owais, the founder of the National Bank of Dubai, to the people of the UAE to remind them of their culture and heritage before the discovery of oil.

Emirates NBD served as sponsor of the prestigious annual George Orwell Lecture at the festival, which took place on Saturday March 9, 2013. This year, the George Orwell lecture was given by Dr. Shashi Tharoor, former United Nations official, a well-known author, and elected member of the Indian Parliament. Dr. Tharoor spoke on the topic of 'Globalisation, Disruption and the Human Imagination,' and will be introduced by British Consul General Ed Hobart.

The Orwell Lecture is one of the flagship events of the Festival, and commemorates the life and work of British author and social activist, George Orwell. Each year, a distinguished speaker responds to this great author, and highlights aspects of his writing or his social engagement.

Background Information

Emirates NBD

Emirates NBD, the leading banking group in the region, was formed on 19 June 1963, when H.H. Late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum signed the Charter of Incorporation of the National Bank of Dubai (NBD) which became the first National Bank established in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). With the blessings of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, NBD merged with Emirates Bank International (EBI) on 06 March 2007, to form Emirates NBD, the largest banking group in the region by assets. On 16 October 2007, the shares of Emirates NBD were officially listed on the Dubai Financial Market (DFM). The merger between EBI and NBD to create Emirates NBD, became a regional consolidation blueprint for the banking and finance sector as it combined the second and fourth largest banks in the UAE to form a banking champion capable of delivering enhanced value across corporate, retail, private, Islamic and investment banking throughout the region.
