ACT holds Free Medical Day

Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT), the world’s gateway to Jordan and beyond, recently held a free medical day, targeting less fortunate communities in the Qatar and Rahmeh villages of Aqaba on May 5th, 2014.

To offer the free medical day’s beneficiaries healthcare services relevant to their needs, ACT had previously conducted a field study to assess the general health conditions affecting the target villages’ inhabitants. The day especially focused on offering medical tests and treatment to the people of the Qatar and Rahmeh Villages in Aqaba. Wheelchairs were distributed to the villages’ inhabitants who were in need of them, with one wheelchair given to each person who is physically challenged.

The medical day also focused on children’s dental needs, benefiting 270 school students from these areas. It featured awareness sessions on dental care and oral hygiene, the students also received dental packs containing pamphlets, leaflets, and all the tools they need to maintain their good dental health, as well as school stationary sets to help them in their studies.

“The launch of this free medical day echoes ACT’s ongoing aims to support all sectors of the community in Aqaba. It also highlights our commitment to elevating levels of health awareness,” said ACT’s CEO Mr. Jeppe Jensen.

Mr. Jensen added that communities need to be healthy, if they are to spearhead developmental advancement and positive social change, and given that ACT is an active contributor to positive socioeconomic advancement in Aqaba, the company is always committed to supporting less fortunate families in the city’s surrounding rural communities.

This is not the first free medical day to be held by ACT. A similar event was held last year, targeting the Wadi Araba area. The free medical day is considered part of a series conducted by ACT every year. It is an initiative held in several villages around Aqaba such as Al Disi, Qweireh and Wadi Araba, and this is one of the many CSR initiatives to be held by ACT.

ACT is a joint venture between the Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC) and APM Terminals, the leading global provider of advanced logistical services — operating via a 25-year build-operate-transfer agreement signed in 2006. The terminal constitutes the logistical and economic backbone of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), serving as the preferred gateway to the region for many active markets around the world. Over the years, the terminal has been a shining example of a large-scale establishment operating under a progressive leadership with an uncompromising dedication to sustainable growth.

Background Information

Aqaba Container Terminal

In 2003, the Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC), on behalf of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, was on a mission to acquire a strategic partnership to improve the efficiency, capacity and the operational performance of the container terminal in Aqaba. After signing a Terminal Management Contract with ADC in 2004, APM Terminals (part of the global A.P. Møller–Maersk Group), took over the management and operation of the terminal.

A 25-year Joint Development Agreement (JDA) was signed between ADC and the Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) in 2006. Under the contract, APM Terminals Jordan operates, manages and markets ACT in addition to executing the Master Plan, which anticipates achieving a drastic increase of throughput capacity through a combination of physical and operational improvements.
