ALBAWABA - Elon Musk, the American entrepreneur and US government contractor best known for his leadership roles at Tesla, SpaceX, xAI, The Boring Company, and X, attempted to block the profit shift of OpenAI, the US based artificial intelligence research organization behind ChatGPT, the generative AI chatbot. However, a US court rejected Musk's bid.

Musk’s bid got rejected

As OpenAI is currently undergoing its profit shift from a non-profit or hybrid model to a fully for-profit organization, Musk attempted to block this process. However, a US court denied Musk’s bid. According to US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland, California, Musk was unable to provide the necessary evidence to stop OpenAI’s profit shift.

Notably, OpenAI is currently in the process of shifting its status from a non-profit to a fully for-profit organization. This move aims to secure the capital the company needs to continue developing its artificial intelligence (AI) tools, features, technologies, and models, according to the company.

It is worth mentioning that Musk previously filed to block OpenAI’s profit shift, claiming that Sam Altman, OpenAI’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), approached him to seek funds for a completely non-profit organization aimed at developing artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to help all of humanity. However, the company is now shifting towards a fully for-profit organization and focusing solely on money and profits.

It is worth mentioning that Altman and Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015, but Musk left shortly after and, in 2023, started his own company, xAI, an American public-benefit corporation focused on artificial intelligence (AI), to compete with Altman.
