ALBAWABA - Discord, a chat platform mainly used by gamers and younger social media users worldwide, suddenly stopped working in Jordan, sparking widespread debate over its possible ban in the country.

While there hasn't been an official announcement of its reported ban, Jordanian netizens flooded several social media platforms with posts concerning the issue. Many reported facing problems upon opening the application on both their smartphones and computers.

Is Discord banned in Jordan?

Many Jordanian users said that they had trouble sending text messages, calling their friends, or accessing groups they had previously joined.

While many mentioned that the platform might've been banned, other social media users are speculating that it could be a server issue linked to the most recent data breach. It's important to note that Discord doesn't have servers in Jordan, with most players connecting to nearby servers in Europe.

Others said that the issue might lie with the local internet service providers (ISPs).

A social media user wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "Bro why I can't use discord did they just ban it in Jordan."

Another added, "It seems the issue is affecting 2 service providers (Orange still has it working), I contacted one of them and they told me that its a global issue from Discord and not from their side, I contacted Discord and I am awaiting for their response in hopes they fix this issue :/"

Links to Discord's recent data breach

According to The Guardian, Discord recently suffered a massive third-party data breach, which leaked its users' personal information, including documents that verify their proof of age, usernames, emails, billing information, and IP addresses.

The gaming chat platform stated, "If your ID may have been accessed, that will be specified in the email you receive."

This comes after countries such as the UK and Australia implemented their online safety acts, which required platforms to apply an age verification step to protect their youth and children from harmful content.

Since its implementation, the game chat platform has started requiring users from the UK and Australia to verify their age with personal IDs or facial recognition. The move sparked backlash on social media, with many internet users accusing their governments of "censorship."
