A 14-years old girl in Yemen committed suicide after her father refused to leave the city square and return home after spending three months there within the framework of the anti-regime movement.
Local papers quoted local sources in the province of Dali as saying that Ashjan Qaed Ahmed Hanini requested from her father, who spent three months in a sit-in Sana'a to return. She made repeated calls, but he refused."
The sources added that after founding the hard-line position of her father and his reusal to respond, the girl decided to commit suicide by hanging herself in the bathroom of the house where the dead body was found.
The sources pointed out that party elements in the village of of the girl decided to bury Ashjan in secret and without notifying the competent authorities about the incident.
Suicide attempts have increased in Yemen in recent years. It is feared to keep increasing over the next couple of years due to the pressure on people and the loss of hope for a better future. According to the yearly study for 2007 conducted by the Yemeni Ministry of Interior, a total of 465 suicide attempts occurred in 2007.
