Bahrain's Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa has been re-elected unopposed as president of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the regional governing body said Thursday.

Shaikh Salman, 49, was "re-elected by acclamation as AFC President at 26th AFC ordinary congress," the AFC tweeted.

It offers a new, complete four-year term for Shaikh Salman, first elected in 2013 to take over from Qatar's Mohamed bin Hammam, who was banned from football by FIFA.

The congress in the Bahrain capital Manama is being attended by every AFC member association in addition to FIFA president Joseph Blatter.

Blatter is standing for a fifth term as FIFA president in an election in Zurich, Switzerland, on May 29. He faces competition from Jordan's Prince Ali bin Al Hussein, former Portugal great Luis Figo and Dutch federation president Michael van Praag.
