At least 19 people were killed last night in a riot outside a football stadium. The violence flared before a game between the Egyptian clubs Zamalek and ENPPI at the Air Defence Stadium just outside Cairo.

State television said an investigation had begun.

Fans said the death toll was probably higher. It was not clear what caused the violence. Officials said fans tried to force their way into the match without tickets. Fans said the violence began because officials only opened one narrow, barbed-wire door to let them in.

The deadliest riot in Egyptian football history was during a 2012 match at Port Said, which left more than 70 people dead.
