UEFA president Michel Platini is to announce his candidacy for FIFA president in the coming days according to a report in French sports paper L'Equipe on Tuesday.
Platini, who attended the Gold Cup final in Philadelphia at the weekend, is working on the final details of his declaration, the paper said without giving a source for its information.
Barring unforeseen circumstances, the 60-year-old Platini will reportedly say on Thursday he is standing for president of the scandal-hit global football governing body.
An extraordinary congress is to be held February 26, 2016, to elect a new president after incumbent Joseph Blatter said he would lay down his mandate just days after being elected again on May 29.
Platini, who declined to challenge Blatter in the previous election, has a strong chance to winning his bid. According to reports, several countries from the European, Asian, South American and the North and Central American confederations have already committed to backing him.
The only declared candidate so far is former FIFA vice-president Chung Mong Joon of South Korea.
