Marco Verratti is hopeful Paris Saint-Germain can overcome Chelsea in the Champions League round of 16 and has set his sights on going all the way in the competition.

The Ligue 1 champions had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Parc des Princes in the first leg of the tie and face a tough task to seal qualification for the quarter-finals at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Nevertheless, the Italy international refuses to throw in the towel just yet and remains optimistic about his side's chances.

"The last few years, we went out with our heads held high, but our ultimate goal is to win the Champions League. That's what we are here for," Verratti told RMC.

"Chelsea are probably stronger than they were last year. They made some great signings, like Cesc Fabregas.

"But for us, these are the kind of games we dream about. There is a lot of pressure on this encounter and we hope to qualify."

Nevertheless, Verratti realises that winning the Champions League will be a huge task and admits PSG might need some more time.

"We are at the highest level again after 23 years or so. It is not easy to win the Champions League in such a short space of time.

"It took Real Madrid 10 years of trying to win the Champions League again. Manchester City have a lot of great players, but few good results in Europe...

"The Champions League goes in cycles and is about gaining experience. We are making steps forward. Step by step we are mixing it up with the biggest teams around."

PSG's biggest success in the Champions League came in 1994-95, when they made it to the semi-finals. They were eliminated in the quarter-finals at their last two attempts.
