Paul Pogba said Manchester United won the Europa League for the victims of the terrorist attack in their city.
The Frenchman scored the opening goal in the final and dedicated the strike to those who died on Monday night.
‘We won for Manchester, we played for the country and for Manchester,’ he said. ‘We played for the people who died. We know things are very sad all over the world, but we had to focus as this was an important game. The goal was to win the Europa League, we did it and I am very proud. They say we had a bad season but the prize is here, it is time to enjoy it now.’
And Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who flicked in the second goal, taking his tally to six in the competition, said he had visions of scoring.
‘Every day I was dreaming I would score in the final,’ the Armenian said.
‘We have been fighting in the Premier League and in Europe. We couldn’t reach the target in the league but here we did everything.’
Former United defender Rio Ferdinand said the players had done the city of Manchester proud.
‘They had the responsibility of bringing light back into the country. Now they will realise the enormity of this game.
‘This week will be remembered for the wrong reasons but United have put positivity back in,’ he said on BT Sport.
